THE INAUGURATION OF THE CHAPEL OF BLESSED ADOLPH KOLPING AND SAINT CRESCENTIA
The Kolping Society was started as a “Journeyman’s association” in Germany during the time of the Industrial Revolution. Various Kolping establishments provided a home environment for workers who travelled and worked away from home. The aim of these establishments was to create a homely environment for those working far away from home. Various aspects of life were covered by the establishments and included the four pillars of Kolping: Family, Society, Work and Spirituality.
The Kolping Society of South Africa also aims to cater to the spiritual needs of its members and it has been a vision to provide a spiritual centre for members to utilize.
November 1st 2006, saw the inauguration of the Chapel of the Blessed Adolph Kolping and Saint Crescentia, in Durbanville at the Kolping National Office. The ceremony was celebrated by The Archbishop of Cape Town, Most Reverend Lawrence Henry, and attended by both local and international dignitaries. We were graced wit the presence of Minister Sinner of the Bavarian Government, Monsignor Axel Werner – the International Praeses of the Kolping Society and performances by the Augsburger Domsingknaben who came down to South Africa especially to form part of the week long celebrations around the Blessing of the Chapel.
The celebration was a fusion of Kolping departments, as each contributed to the success and overall enjoyment of the event that was jointly hosted by the Kolping Society and the Kolping Guest House. Guests were entertained by the Work Opportunity Programme student support group and Kolping Training Centre family drummers, enjoyed the performances of many choirs and marimbas, and had the opportunity to spend time supporting Kolping families at the night market after the Blessing of the Chapel.
This event saw many Kolping families coming together both spiritually and socially, and we hope that this has set the tone for future use of the Chapel of Blessed Adolph Kolping and Saint Crescentia. This Chapel is open to all, and we urge everyone to visit the Chapel and to make use of the Chapel for your events, retreats and special occasions.
